The “Tree of life” or niche model is a mental framework used in ecology to understand how species coexist, compete, and collaborate within shared environments.
It emphasizes interdependence, specialization, and balance. When applied to IT decision-making, the ecological niche model offers a lens to view IT services, teams, and technologies as distinct “species” within the broader “ecosystem” of an organization.
Just as species in nature occupy niches to avoid direct competition and maximize resource efficiency, IT functions must be aligned with specific business goals, technical requirements, and operational needs. This model helps IT leaders identify overlaps, gaps, and opportunities for optimization by mapping out the “roles” each service or team plays.

The concept of an ecological niche was first proposed by the American ecologist G. Evelyn Hutchinson in the 1950s. Hutchinson described the niche as the “role” or “position” an organism occupies within an ecosystem, encompassing its interactions with other species, resource use, and environmental conditions. This idea is closely tied to the Tree of Life, a metaphor for the interconnectedness of all living organisms, where each branch represents a distinct evolutionary path and ecological function.
